The Met Gala with Luxe List

The Met Gala is one of my favourite nights - where else are the fashion elite gathered somewhere as spectacular at the Metropolitan Museum of Art? This year, the gala celebrates the opening of the new exhibition showcasing the genius of couturier Charles James.

Although his name isn't as iconic as Dior or Balenciaga, his gowns truly were works of art, and the Cecil Beaton photograph of debutantes wearing his creations has inspired generations. When I was at school, Beaton's photograph was centre stage in my room. Not only did I worship at the throne of Beaton, but I adored the Juicy Couture adverts which it inspired.

More recently, Steven Meisel recreated the shot using exclusively Asian models all bedecked in Oscar de la Renta. A few months before the picture was published, I was lucky enough to be at a talk with Anna Wintour, who unveiled the image. She explained the thought process behind the photograph, and applauded the diversity it celebrated, and then she shared a secret - the models didn't originally sport mohicans - after all the planned shots had been taken, Grace Coddington switched up the hair, and voila! The iconic photo was born!

Ok, apologies for the history lesson, but I'm not-so-subtly obsessed with the work of Charles James, but now onto my Met Ball favorites! Before I get into it, I should say that, since the dress code was White Tie, I'm obsessed with the proper, old-school gowns.

Karolina Kurkova in Marchesa absolutely nailed the modern interpretation of a Charles James gown. The lines on this are absolutely breathtaking!

Karlie Kloss in an Oscar de la Renta lame gown was a stunning, if slightly darker take on the Jamesian gown.

Tabitha Simmons in Dolce & Gabbanna Alta Moda is like something out of a fairytale. I admit, it's not the most flattering around the waist, but those flowers, and that tulle!

I'm obsessed with Arizona Muse's Ralph & Russo's haute couture gown. The colour, the bow and the teeny tiny waist are just the height of chic!

Lastly is Stella Tennant. I see her kind of regularly around Edinburgh, and she's normally in jeans with no makeup on, but still absolutely striking. In the icy blue Burberry, she is the image of elegance, and her Mitford heritage really shows! I'm completely obsessed!

Now all I have to do is book my tickets to New York - Charles James Beyond Fashion looks like the most stunning of exhibitions, the accompanying book is already winging its way to me!
